how to connect fuel pressure gauge to 93 1.9l escort?
I have a 93 escort I believe has a weak fuel pump. There is what looks like a test port on the fuel rail with a plastic cap on it. If you take the plastic cap off, there is a rubber piece in there. I'm not sure what this is or why it's there or how to connect a gauge to get a reading on the fuel pressure. Can i just connect a gauge to that port with the proper fitting and just leave the rubber piece where it is?
Remove the rubber piece. It is probably the cap seal which may have been jammed into the test port if it was capped too tight. You should be able to see the Schrader valve underneath the cap on the test port and the Schrader valve should exposed and unobstructed when you install the adapter fitting and test gauge. The proper fuel pressure on that should be about 50 psi. It shouldn't take more than 2 key ON cycles (engine not running) to bring the fuel pressure up to about 50 psi, and with the engine running at idle rpm the fuel pressure should be steady at about 50 psi without much fluctuation. And with the engine shut off the pressure should stay within a few psi of the high point for some time before bleeding down.
