Cheque Your Credit Cards
A new type of credit card fraud has swept the nation; credit conjuring. This magic trick is costing banks thousands of pounds, and swindled consumers face heartache and debt worries when targeted.
Credit card cloning has been around for a while, but it's not always possible for a thief to see how much there is left to spend on that card. They needed a way to put money onto it in order to use it. Thus, credit conjuring magically appeared.
Conjuring money out of thin air sounds impossible but fraudsters are managing it by cloning a credit card, loading thousands of pounds onto it using a cheque from a defunct bank account, and spending the money on the card before banks find out the cheque has bounced.
Bank details can be bought by fraudsters from unscrupulous call centres, who think nothing of selling hundreds of account details for as little as £5. These call centres can pose as a mobile phone company, internet service provider, or any other trade to obtain personal financial details, which are then recorded and sold on.
It's a frightening thought but there are ways to protect yourself and your plastic. Never give out any bank account or card details over the phone unless you have called the company yourself and are 100% sure you are speaking to a legitimate representative of that company. If you receive a phone call asking for card details, a genuine caller won't mind you phoning them back after you verify the phone number. It may sound like a long-winded way to sort out a financial matter but consider how much it could save in both worry and money.
Some banks have introduced policies to prevent the spread of conjuring, namely calling the account holder if the name on the card and cheques don't match. In some cases there is a genuine reason for this; a parent may be paying off their son's card for example, but it's a simple safeguard which could save the consumers and banks thousands of pounds.
It's a good idea never to let your credit card out of your sight. In a restaurant for example, don't let the waiter walk off with any credit cards, as this gives them a chance to clone them. There's no such thing as interest free credit cards to thieves and fraudsters.
